The characteristics of voice traffic were studied in depth in the 1960s in order to raise the efficiency of trans-oceanic communication cables. Most of today's papers on Voice Over the Internet Protocol (VOIP) refer to these 1960s studies, even though they were done in a very different context than today's packetised networks. This project will determine the temporal characteristics of packetised voice traffic in current environments (e.g. VOIP) and will, for the first time, characterize the correlations between activity by participants in a conversation.
